European data center services provider Interxion recently announced it had suffered a security data breach, potentially exposing the personal information of more than 23,000 existing and prospective customers. The company notified affected customers via email this weekend, saying it had become aware of the incident in December when an intruder gained access to its Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.
“The business contact information that was accessed consisted of contact person’s names, job titles and (business) contact details, such as (business) email addresses and phone numbers,” read the notice.
Interxion specified neither financial nor other sensitive customer data was impacted. “We emphasise that this incident only affected Interxion’s CRM system and did not impact or involve any data centers or services that Interxion provides,” the email stated. In response to the incident, the company added it has collaborated with its CRM supplier and has worked closely with its security team to ensure that all CRM information is secure. “Measures have been taken to address this specific vulnerability,” said Interxion Managing Director Andrew Fay in the email. “We have also informed the authorities in all of the appropriate jurisdictions.” Fray also stated Interxion proactively monitors issues of such in real-time using the latest security techniques. “We have a strong track record of protecting our systems and CRM customer data,” Fray said. “We will continue to take appropriate measures to ensure the integrity of our IT systems and protocols.”
Source: GrahamCluley.com British security blogger Graham Cluley said that although it’s fortunate that further sensitive information was not stolen, it’s still possible that online criminals could leverage the information to contact the company’s business contacts, develop carefully-crafted phishing campaigns and other attacks.
“If you do business with Interxion it would seem to me to be wary of any unusual communications you receive, and contact the company if you are in any way uncertain whether a communication from the firm is legitimate or not,” Cluley warns.
Interxion is the second-largest data center provider in the region, with more than 40 data centers across 11 countries in Europe.
