Our Story
As the pioneers of file integrity monitoring (FIM), Tripwire’s expertise is built on a 25+ year history of innovation. We have more than 40 patents under our belt and never stop inventing new ways to detect issues and defeat intruders.
Tripwire in the '90s
Our story started when our founder Gene Kim developed software as a Purdue student inspired by his interest around the Morris Worm, one of the first major malware attacks. In 1992, Gene published “Tripwire” software as an academic source release designed to detect when changes occur to files and help with recovery. It rapidly became one of the most widely-used intrusion detection tools for UNIX. This Innovation became widely known as FIM. With support from corporate, education, and government security professionals, Gene founded Tripwire, Inc. in 1997 to bring FIM to the commercial market.
Tripwire in the '00s
Tripwire went on to develop more capabilities during an opportune time as e-commerce boomed, requiring security controls that would become the basis of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). During this time, we also released Open Source Tripwire, which remains available today. In 2005, we released the first version of Tripwire Enterprise, a security configuration management (SCM) suite.
Tripwire in the '10s
After acquiring ActiveWorx Technologies in 2010, we announced the log intelligence solution Tripwire LogCenter. And with the acquisition of nCircle in 2013, we rounded out our portfolio with the addition of the asset discovery and vulnerability management solution Tripwire IP360™. In 2015, Tripwire was acquired by signal transmission and networking company Belden. Since that time, Tripwire has broadened its product portfolio to include operational technology (OT) solutions for utilities, manufacturing, and energy companies.
Tripwire in the '20s
We’ve also extended our solutions into the cloud, securing virtual infrastructures across multi-cloud and hybrid environments. Tripwire launched the Tripwire ExpertOps service to give customers a managed services option for supporting their SCM, VM, and OT security programs. In 2022, Tripwire was acquired by security and automation company HelpSystems, now Fortra. As part of Fortra, Tripwire will continue to expand our reach in the cybersecurity market.
